Skin Imperfections

Most moles, cysts and other skin imperfections are benign. The moles (nevi) lesions are safe and transformation into melanoma is exceptional. However, we must suspect this transformation if there is a change in the appearance of a mole and then perform the ablation (or excision) of the lesion. The changes in a mole to monitor include: irregular border, a non-homogeneous staining; mixing brown, black, and / or red; irregular terrain, a progressive increase in size.

Patients often seek the removal of the lesions solely to improve the appearance of the skin. The majority of techniques used to remove moles and other skin lesions do not take a lot of time.

The most common excision techniques result in flush removal with the surface of the skin or excision in depth with closure of the incision with stitches (complete excision).

The surface shaving with a scalpel is a technique used to treat injuries that go beyond the skin. Skin is frozen with a local anesthetic, lesion is removed. If the lesion is purely superficial, no trace remains as a small white spot would if it were deeper.

A biopsy is needed in the case of deep cyst or profound nevi.

The lesion removed in depth and the incision closed with stitches, a scar that results will most often have the appearance of a very thin white line, although it may be more apparent if the lesion was wide or in the case of an abnormal healing.

In the case of an injury to his face, the surgeon could use very fine stiches on the surface and melting ones under the skin.

The permanent removal of hair that grows sometimes on a mole is preferably obtained by excision in depth.

There are other techniques for removing imperfections of the skin: cautery, laser or liquid nitrogen. Your plastic surgeon will inform you about the best way to remove these ungraceful imperfections.
